New Sydney Wind Quintet
Chapel Theatre
Tuesday June 29
New Sydney Wind Quintet, Australia’s premier wind quintet, is coming to New England for a 4 day residency at the New England Conservatorium of Music.
The NECOM residency offers students and audiences from across New England the chance to experience a world class chamber ensemble as the group tours to Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Warialda and Inverell.
The quintet will be joined by two local musicians, pianist Rebecca Simon, and flautist Nick Negervich, for two public concerts and host of activity at local schools.
The first concert will be at 7pm on Tuesday June 29 at the Chapel Theatre in Glen Innes. On Wednesday June 30 the group will perform at Sir Henry Parks School of the Arts in Tenterfield at 7pm.
The program features music from both classical and contemporary composers including works by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel and Percy Grainger. The highlight of the program is a world premiere from contemporary composer Lyle Chan. Chan’s works ‘Passage’ and ‘Calcium Light Night for Wind Quintet’ have been written especially for the New Sydney Wind Quintet, and will be played live for the first time on this tour.
During the four days in the region, the quintet will also undertake a series of concerts, demonstrations and masterclasses at local schools including Tenterfield High School, Warialda School, Holy Trinity School and Inverell High School.
This residency follows the group’s well-attended and acclaimed concert for Musica Viva Armidale in 2009. “[The] audience were intrigued and captivated by refined and accomplished playing” said the review in The Armidale Times.
Now is its sixth year, the New Wind Quintet is considered Australia’s leading wind quintet, receiving national and international acclaim.
Founded in 2004 by flautist Bridget Bolliger, the group comprises Sydney Symphony members oboist Alexandre Oguey and clarinetist Francesco Celata, along with bassoonist Darryl Poulsen and horn player Andrew Bain.
“Were really looking forward to coming to New England Conservatorium of Music, we enjoy performing across Australia and reaching wide audiences with our music” says Bridget Bolliger.
