“Don't Waste the Popcorn!”...

For all you budding film stars, directors, journalists, graphic artists, cinematographers, musicians, animators, screen writers, and general artistic types out there, the Glen Innes Arts Council will be holding a short film festival in November 2009, and your entries are wanted!

The “Don't Waste the Popcorn!” New England Short Film Festival will be open to people of all ages and interests.

Categories for entry will be Documentary, Animation, Drama, Comedy, and Music Video, with entries meeting the relevant criteria also being eligible for the “New England Connection” and “Youth” awards. Prize money will be awarded for winners and runners up in each category, along with several other major awards including “Best Overall Film” and “Audience Choice”.

The short-listed short films will be screened and prizes awarded at a “black tie movie star” affair at the Chapel Theatre on November 7th, complete with red carpet and spotlight. Pre-screenings of entries are also being planned.

Above sessions $5 for all patrons - tickets at door only
(Each Audience member receives a vote for the Audience Choice Award)

Awards Night
Saturday 7th November 2009, 7:30 pm for 8pm start
– Adults $20 / concession $15 - tickets at Carelles
(Each Audience member receives a vote for the Audience Choice Award)

Christian is the grandson of Mia and Richard Cambridge (life members of the Glen Innes Arts Council who heavily involved in the development of the Chapel Cinema). Christian told Mia when he was only 5 that he was going to write and novel and make a film.

Jack is 12 and lives in Glen Innes with his family. He developed his short film using single frame Lego animation, with the assistance of his friends Mitch Willis, Jacob Howard, and brother Tom Montgomery.

Phil is a former Glen Innes resident ("born, raised and drank the water" as he puts it), and his parents still live here. Phil works in the film industry and has worked on movies such as "The Matrix".

Karen Pouye - Pirates

From Horsley, NSW. currently studying for her Master's Degree in Digital Media at the University of Newcastle. She started her career as a teacher specializing in art and science, but later became a freelance graphic designer. She discovered multimedia which she found to be an obsession as it opened up so many creative avenues such as motion graphics, animation, vfx, audio and video, providing a boundless scope well beyond the confines of a still imaging.

Jack won this award convincingly - he received 34 out of the approx 120 Votes received from the general screenings and the awards night. The next closest was Cameron Moor and "Not Knowing" on 16 votes, followed closely by "Pirates" by Karen Pouye on 13.

"Early Checkout" - Dustin Clare and Clarke Richards - Co-directed and produced, and starred in this film

Dustin Clare born in Grafton, lives in Ballina. Trained at Western Australian Academy of Perfmorning Arts, and has won a Logie for Most Popular New talent on Australian Television for his role of Riley Ward on McLeod's Daughters in 2007. Clarke Richards trained as an actor at the Australian Academy of Dramatic Arts in Sydney. Clarke has won both best actor and best director at the "Shoot OUt" 24hr Film Making Festival in Newcastle in 2008.

Short films entered in this film festival have not been classified by the Classifications Office, however an Exemption from Classification has been granted to a level of MA15+. This means that all children under the age of 15 who attend must be accompanied by a responsible adult / guardian. While every attempt has been made to ensure that films shown during the festival meet the classification guidelines for “G” “PG” or “M” classifications, some content may still be confusing for young viewers. As many films as possible have been included in the general screening sessions, however, due to time limitations, it is not possible to screen all films entered in the festival.

Judging: Judging was completed by a panel of judges from across the community, who scored against set criteria including cinematography, editing/production, sound, scriptwriting / screenplay, performance /acting / interviewing, originality, creativity, and entertainment value. Average scores from the total of all judges for each film were used to determine awards.
