“Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” New England Short Film Festival is a natural progression for the Glen Innes Arts Council, as it brings together two core aspects of the Arts Council:
Glen Innes is a town full of fantastically talented people, from Musicians, to Actors, to Visual Artists, in a region of NSW that is equally as talented. This is an opportunity for local talent to shine! In our first year of “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!”, we would like you to join us. So put your talents to good use and have a go. We are waiting for your short films now!

If there is sufficient community demand, the “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” committee reserves the right to arrange additional screening sessions of films submitted. There will be no remuneration to applicants in respect of their submission being shown during the festival, or afterwards, however applicants will be notified if additional screenings are arranged. Short listed applicants will be notified via e-mail prior to “Don’t Waste the Popcorn” festival. “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” is auspiced by the Glen Innes Arts Council Inc, a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting performing arts in the Glen Innes region. Entry Fees Adults $20 / Students $15 Entry fee should be paid by cheque or money order made out to Glen Innes Arts Council. There is no limit to the number of entries per person, but a separate entry form and entry fee should be submitted for each entry. Closing date and address for entries Films should be submitted by Friday 25th September 2009 (post-marked on or before close of business) to: “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!”
Categories for Submissions 1. Documentary
In addition to the above categories, entries may be eligible for one of the following categories, if the criteria are met. 6. New England connection (Connection by birth, residency, location of filming, to New England region of NSW, Australia – based on Australian Federal electoral boundaries)
Entries may be eligible for submission / awards in more than one category. Awards to be presented
Judging of films / presentation of awards will be by a panel according to set criteria, and the judging decisions will be final. Audience choice will be awarded according to secret ballot conducted during “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” festival screenings – one vote per audience member. Patron’s choice award will solely be the decision of the “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” patron. Format for Submissions Films should be submitted in DVD format (highest quality available) in a clearly labelled hard case, with a short synopsis (on submission form) and publicity photo / artwork for the “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” program (if desired). If the film is not of suitable visual and sound quality to be played in the Chapel Theatre, it will not be screened, nor will it be eligible for prizes. Entries should be no longer than 10 minutes, however, in some circumstances it may be possible for a film of a slightly longer duration to be accepted, at the discretion of the “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” committee. Please submit request for extension of film length to the organising committee in writing, stating your justification. Submissions may include a brief introduction to their film (who, what, why, where etc), of maximum length 30 seconds, and as a separate track on the submission DVD to the actual film submitted. Entry Guidelines All entries to be consistent with a “G”, “PG”, or “M” rating. All films submitted will be reviewed by the judging panel, and films deemed not suitable at the discretion of the panel (due to excessive language, violence, nudity, sexual acts, defamation, discrimination, or technical issues) will not be accepted into “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!”. Films submitted into “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” should be the original work of the submitter. “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!” / Glen Innes Arts Council Inc takes no responsibility for any infringement of copyright, performance rights, defamatory, illegal or obscene material or other liability what so ever contained in or arising from films submitted. It is expected that applicants have arranged suitable copyright / performance rights and / or licences where necessary prior to submission into “Don’t Waste the Popcorn!”. Any claims made by any person, entity or third party against the film are entirely the responsibility of the applicant. Entries that have been submitted to other film festivals are welcome, however please advise the “Don’t Waste the Popcorn” committee of which festivals it has been submitted to, and if any awards have been won for this film. Return of Submissions Films can be collected from the Glen Innes Arts Council following the festival, or can be returned via post if a self addressed pre-paid envelope / packaging is included with the original entry.
